Pancreatectomy and Initial Stages of Digestion

Once the pancreas is excised from the abdominal cavity it is transferred to the back table in. After a visual inspection to determine whether the organ is suitable for islet isolation, the pancreas is moved to the cannulation pan, where the fatty tissue is carefully trimmed from the pancreas. After that the main pancreatic duct is cannulated, and the cannula is secured by suture. To perfuse the pancreas, the enzyme (called collagenase) solution is poured into the cannulation pan. The cannula is also infused with a collagenase solution, to achieve the distension of the pancreas. Then the pancreas is cut into several smaller pieces and transferred to an isolation chamber for digestion.
